Our History

The Wildlife Rangers Club of Suriname
(the WRCS)

Stichting The Wildlife Rangers Club of Suriname (THE WRCS) is a non-profit nature focused organization. One of the oldest nature organizations and the only (Wildlife) Rangers organization in the Republic of Suriname.

Founded in 1973 and previously known as Wildlife Rangers Club Suriname (WRCS). The initiators were Dhr. Narain (biologist), Harrold Sijlbing and Kenneth Tjon Kon Fat. It started as a youth organization by the youth for the youth. An organization created to be an educational, safe and fun environment for young Surinamese students between the ages 16 and 25 to learn about the importance of the tropical rainforest and therefore help protect and preserve nature. A concept that not only educates young people but also prepares them to educate the community in particularly other young people.

For many decades the Stichting Natuurbehoud Suriname (STINASU) functioned as the mother organization of THE WRCS. It didn’t only play an important role as facilitator for THE WRCS youth to have access to protected land for educational purpose, but also provided guidance to THE WRCS members about nature and functioning of the organization. THE WRCS in return had the responsibility to create nature conscious young individuals whom through the years have been and still are working in key positions in the community when it comes to fields like eco-tourism and environmental research.

After THE WRCS has been inactive for approximately 11 years, Wildlife Ranger Sharda Johnn took it upon herself to re-activate this important nature organization. In December 2022 the first Wildlife Rangers get-together was organized and starting from January 2023, Miss Sharda has been working with a team to accomplish this mission.

The soft-launch of The Wildlife Rangers Club of Suriname (THE WRCS) was establish on September 11, 2023 which was also the 50th anniversary of the organization. The start of new beginnings for THE WRCS and a new era in the active involvement of students in nature conservation and protection in the Republic of Suriname.

THE WRCS motto is Nature conservation is self-preservation. Nature can survive and strive without humans though not vice versa. We are very much aware that nature is not outside of us but that we are a part of nature. Respecting the existence of nature means respecting our own lives and those of future generations to come.
